DEPARTMENT OF TELUGU

Telugu is a Central Dravidian Language also known as the “Italian of the East,” is the fifteenth most spoken language globally.  The Department of Telugu provides a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment for students to develop their interpretive and expressive skills.  The Department delivers students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter and critical and analytic skills in areas such as origins, evolutions, inscriptional history, literary tradition, cultural heritage, race relations, the relationship to other languages and contemporary applications of language studies.

Objectives

  • To promote studies in Telugu language, literature and culture.
  • To engage in teaching and research in Telugu, emphasising comparative and historical language and literature studies.
  • To develop Telugu Studies in relation to other languages, focusing on comparative aspects and heritage through an interdisciplinary approach.
  • To develop contemporary applications of language studies focusing on the current job market and providing specialised training in translation activity.
  • To introduce new learning modules in Telugu to enhance student interest in their mother tongue.

Careers:

Telugu develops successful literary luminaries as scholars, writers, critics,  teachers, administrators and pursuers of higher education and research.
